“There was a general belief that it would be better for football to be played on campus, but there was nothing happening, specifically, to get the ball rolling,” said Jim Miller, UR’s athletic director since 2000. “When that discussion occurred with the city council and we were informed that there was going to be an appraisal done for the purpose of perhaps selling that property, it kind of forced us to have a meeting.”

In a special session Tuesday afternoon, the city council re-named the old University of Richmond Stadium to help clear up any possible confusion before the Richmond Spiders first home game at its new location.

Bounded by McCloy Street, Freeman Road and Maplewood Avenue, the stadium site measures a little less than 16.6 acres. It’s a valuable piece of property. The city has assessed the value of the land and facilities at $5.3 million; a nearby parking lot is worth another $329,000.
