RRHA board approves plan for 50-acre Dove Street development

A plan to replace the demolished Dove Court public-housing complex in Richmond’s Highland Park neighborhood with a larger, mixed-income community and possibly a new Overby-Sheppard Elementary School is being advanced by the city’s housing authority and a North Carolina-based development firm.

Richmond to solicit ideas for schools

The superintendent and the School Board chairwoman Monday announced an ambitious, nearly yearlong plan to solicit ideas on improving public education in the city. They want to hear from anyone who wants to participate, whether they have an active stake in the school system or not.

Charges certified in case of boy left on Richmond school bus

Yesterday, Judge Richard B. Campbell of Richmond Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court certified felony child neglect charges against Alvin D. Matthews, a substitute bus driver, and Irene Jenkins, the bus monitor. The case was sent to the October grand jury over the objections of their lawyers, who argued there was no evidence of intent or willful negligence.

Richmond paying for empty seats at specialty school

Two years ago, the School Board included $10.5 million in its budget for the new building. Several months later, incoming Mayor Dwight C. Jones said finding the school a permanent home was one of his top priorities. Last November, then-School Board Chairwoman Chandra Smith sent the company a letter saying the board had “voted to affirm its intent and support for the establishment of a permanent facility.”Less than a year later, that building is off the table.

Schools – Schools foundation hires its first executive director

The foundation was established in 2001 but barely was active in recent years, securing contributions and grants totaling about $10,000 or less each year from 2005 to 2007, according to the group’s 2008 federal tax form — the most recent available. The total exceeded $188,000 in 2008. By comparison, the Chesterfield Public Education Foundation reported raising nearly twice as much in the same year. timesdispatch.com
