To make it easier to find Richmond’s historic places, Jones put $900,000 in the budget for new tourist-oriented signs. A $100,000 contract to study what’s needed and design the signs is expected to be awarded next month.

Erecting signs to advertise the fact that the city is doing what it has a responsibility to do seems odd, like taking out a newspaper ad to alert your neighbors that you mow your lawn.

The signs, which credit Jones and Chief Administrative Officer Byron C. Marshall, include the city’s logo, the mayor’s “Building a Better Richmond” slogan and the tagline, “Your tax dollars hard at work!” The signs cost $150 apiece.

Work to begin in the next two weeks
WHAT
The Honorable Ellen F. Robertson, Councilwoman, Richmond City Council, Gateway 6th District, today announces a complete streetscape makeover of Columbia Street (from Chesterman Street to Webber Avenue) in Richmond’s Gateway 6th District. Work is to begin in the next two weeks.
This comprehensive cityscape infrastructure makeover will include: construction of new sidewalks; pavement rehabilitation; removal and replacement of selected trees; and, the rehabilitation of the street crossing at Goode’s Creek.
This project, funded in the Richmond City Council FY 2011 Richmond Government Budget, will be performed by city contractors and overseen by the Richmond Department of Public Works.
