Animals – Henrico may expand authority of animal-protection officers

Animal-control officers train at the police academy and receive the same certification as police officers “but have limited authority,” Middleton said. “If we have people who are trained and ready to respond, it just makes sense to give them the authority.”

The code amendment, he said, would free police officers from animal calls and make it easier for the animal-protection unit to handle service calls.

Animals – Council set to approve rules for hybrid canines

If approved, the rules would require owners to get an annual permit and to provide a pen that’s at least 8½ feet tall and 500 square feet in area with features to discourage digging. The pen would have to be surrounded by another fence at least 4 feet in height and separated by at least 6 feet on each side.
